While keeping our communities’ air clean largely rests at the government and corporate levels, we as citizens can do our part to ensure that we don’t pollute, especially when we drive. Making sure your car meets emission standards helps reduce the pollution of the air that we all breathe. Here, we’ll talk about lowering air pollution via auto emissions. About Auto Emissions: Of all the pollutants in the air that cause smog, 1/3 of them come from automotive combustion engines. In fact, transportation causes about 27% of all of the greenhouse gas emissions in America. All of this information comes from the EPA. Do your part for the environment; if you notice something wrong with your exhaust or catalytic converter, please don’t wait to take it to a mechanic. It won’t just benefit the environment; it can help preserve your car’s health as well! The trusted mechanics at Newton’s Car Care have tons of experience fixing ... read more

We all need to remember to stay safe on the road. It only takes a moment of distraction for a tragedy to occur. As we take driving into the 21st century, we have started to realize how many things can prove detrimental to our ability to get behind the wheel safely. Here, we’ll go over texting while driving, and why it has become the new menace of the road. The Menace: Driving requires perfect attention. It only takes a second of looking into the wrong direction for another car to hit you. All of the time you spend looking at your phone, you might as well drive with your eyes closed. Statistics: 1,600,000 people die every single year because of texting while driving according to the National Safety Council. The average text requires about 5 seconds of your time. Traveling 55 mph, you can cross the distance of a football field.Teens have the highest risk of te ... read more

Staying safe on the road requires a lot of focus; it only takes an instant for a wreck to occur. Many things can increase the likelihood of a car wreck, most commonly we think of drunk driving. However, another comparably dangerous activity exists: sleep deprived driving. We’ve put together some information about this menace of the road here. Don’t Drive Sleep Deprived: Here at Newton’s Car Care, we care about our community’s safety. When driving, that means staying focused and clear headed on the road the entire time. When you get tired, you can’t do that. We encourage you to find an alternate solution to driving sleep deprived. National Sleep Foundation: The NSF has found that, based on participants studied, 1/3 of them self reported having completely fallen asleep behind the wheel on the road at least once. They also found that the people most susceptible to sleep deprived driving included young women and men, ne ... read more

Unless you just started driving, you probably know what your suspension does; it keeps your car from bouncing around and jostling you. Also, you may not know, it gives your car better control during turns and stops. You probably appreciate this, so you might express interest in knowing how your suspension works. To help you, we’ve put together a quick overview here. How it works: Your suspension system gets built from a variety of parts: chassis, leaf springs, coil springs, dampeners and torsion bars. The leaf and coil springs absorb the up and down motion that results from your car hitting bumps on the road. The dampeners (shocks and struts) take this energy and dissipate it through hydraulic fluid (via thermal energy). The torsion bars keep the vehicle from moving side to side, especially important in top-heavy vehicles. That sums up the general basics of your suspension. If you require suspension re ... read more

Did you know that if you learn information about your car in tiny increments, over time you will have a great overall understanding of how it works? This can come in handy in a variety of ways, from spotting damage early on to assessing necessary repairs. If this sounds appealing to you, we can help. Here, we’ve put together some info about how your radiator works. What it does: Your radiator’s job involves cooling the internal combustion engine. Because of all the parts working and grinding together, your engine gets so hot that it would damage itself if not cooled. How it works: The radiator gets connected to channels that go through the engine. It usually uses a combination of water and antifreeze. This liquid absorbs heat from the engine, then moves to an area where the heat can dissipate into air, usually in front of the car’s grill (if the engine sits in the front of the car). Hopefully now you understand another one of y ... read more

A lot goes into building your car and keeping it running smoothly. So many parts make it up that it can get hard to keep track of them all. Still, learning about it bit by bit can help you understand it better and hopefully spot signs of damage when they pop up. To help you with this, we’ve come up with an overview of how your muffler works: Engine Noise: Your engine creates a lot of noise that fires down your exhaust and could disturb many people. To avoid this, your exhaust has a muffler built in that decreases the noise pollution. These mufflers have things called “baffle chambers” that cause the sound waves to bounce around inside them, hitting each other until they cancel each other out. Performance: The usefulness of your muffler goes beyond merely dampening the noise from your engine. They can also increase your fuel performance. Many different kind of mufflers exist that offer different benefits. Do you understand this part a little bit better? We hope ... read more

We use them every day, but how much do we really know about them? Driving our cars became a sort of quantum leap in the progression of civilization. To understand some of that impact, we’ve put together some interesting car-related facts: Over 1 billion vehicleсcurrently get driven around the world. Around the globe, we build over 165,000 cars each day. The “new car smell” comes from at least 50 different noxious chemicals. The average vehicle contains about 30,000 different parts. About 92% of cars recently sold in Brazil run on ethanol made from sugarcane. Of all the cars that Rolls Royce has produced, 75% of them still drive today. In America, the average person wastes about 38 hours each year in traffic. In Russia, you can get arrested for driving a dirty car. More cars exist in the city of Los Angelos than human beings. The farthest length a vehicle ever traveled reached 2,850,000 miles. Henry ... read more

Your suspension is much more important than just maintaining a smooth ride; it’s integral when controlling your vehicle, especially stopping or turning. Not all signs of suspension damage are obvious. Here’s what to look out for: Rough Riding: This one is obvious; the rougher your car ride the worse your suspension is doing. If going over bumps makes your car bounce up and down, it’s time to take it in. Drifting/Pulling During Turns: If your vehicles drifts or pulls during each turn, it’s a good sign that your suspension is not keeping your car stable from the centrifugal force of your turn. This can dangerously increase the risk of your car rolling over. Front End Dips When Stopping: When your shocks quit working properly, your vehicle will lurch forward and dip its nose during a stop. This can be extremely dangerous, as a faulty suspension can increase stopping time by 20%, making wrecks more likely. ... read more

Everybody is lazy sometimes; there’s no shame in it. Most people don’t want to spend a ton of time keeping their car clean. For those of you who like to work smarter, not harder, here’s a few tips to maintaining the cleanliness of your vehicle: Don’t eat in your car: This may seem like a big sacrifice, but just think of all the time you’ll be saving throwing away accumulated trash. It’s also a great excuse to sit back and enjoy your meal in a more comfortable setting. Wax occasionally: It’s a little bit of work, but a good waxing goes a long way towards keeping your car looking shiny and new. You won’t need to wash quite as often later on. Knock off shoes before entering the vehicle: Making a habit of this will keep dirt from accumulating on the floor of your car. It may take a little getting used to, but a few quick raps against the ground goes a long way towards keeping your car clean. Keep a trash bag in your car ... read more
